Plein Air in the Hunza Valley

This past September I had the privilege to travel through the Northern Areas of Pakistan with a small groups of artists in order to paint the diverse and awe-inspiring landscape of the country.

Our group of five travelled from Islamabad through to Hunza along an ancient silk route, which is now the Karakoram Highway. Making stops in the towns of Batakundi, Karimabad, Gilgit and Nagar, we painted in the surrounding locations. Over the nine days of travel, I produced sixteen studies of the unique and varied landscapes that are encased within these northern areas of Pakistan. Along with arid deserts and majestic mountains, we had the privilege to paint monumental glaciers, whose time on this planet seems to be running short.

Unfortunately, at the time of our trip, many areas of the country had been devastated by the abundance of rainfall in the monsoon season; floods and mudslides killing thousands and displacing millions. We were fortunate to not have been affected, however, the comparatively small amount of damage we saw made obvious the ruinous affects of climate change on this part of the world.

Returning to Islamabad on the morning of September 10th, we displayed all 67 of our artworks that night in an exhibition named The North; curated and organised by Dastaangoi, who also curated and organised the entire trip.

Visiting and painting Pakistan was an unforgettable experience and I plan to return in the near future to produce larger more focused work.

My work from this trip can be viewed below.

Limited Edition prints of all of the work made on this trip by myself and fellow artists will be available for sale through the Dastaangoi Gallery.
